Vaastu / Feng Shui: The Science of Healthy & Prosperous Lifestyle

You bought a classic painting depicting a war scene from Ramayana or Mahabharata. But your mother or some elder person denied placing the same in your house. Did you ever try to find out the reason behind this? People often decorate their houses, especially the main entrance, with paintings & idols for prosperity and healthy living. From the basic layout to architecture, people are getting more concerned for Vaastu or Feng Shui norms. Both these traditional systems of designs & architecture had long been essentially restricted to temple architecture. And recently there has been a revival in both the forms in India.

Vaastu Shastra
According to this Hindu system of design based on directional alignments, the world comprises of five basic elements known as the ‘pancha maha bhoota’ namely EARTH (Bhumi), WATER (Jala), AIR (Vayu), FIRE (Agni) and SPACE (Akasha). As per Hindu mythology, a person can improve his conditions by properly designing his building & understanding the effectiveness of these five elements. In Sanskrit, ‘Vas’ means ‘dwelling’. If a building or home is perfectly designed as per Vaastu-friendly norms, it can get you enhanced health, wealth, prosperity and happiness.

Feng Shui
Evolved by the Chinese, this ancient art is practiced all across the globe today. However, its message was not properly conveyed to the world, so Feng Shui has been restricted to interior decorating in the Western world. Modern Feng Shui is not considered as a superstitious scam. People believe that it is very helpful in living a prosperous and healthy life by avoiding/blocking negative energies. The trend of designing buildings as per Feng Shui or Vaastu-friendly norms – by real estate builders & developers in India – is getting popular everyday.

Vaastu / Feng Shui Tips for Your Home
This part of Vedic wisdom tells us how to arrange our homes and offices effectively so that we can attract luck and good fortune. Just follow some simple tips and you’ll start gaining positive energies that you always tried to sustain in your home:

  • In Feng Shui, the main entrance is considered to be a mouth of ‘chi’ (positive) energy. So be cautious with the colour, shape & pattern.
  • The main door should not open towards south, southeast or southwest. These are the directions of death & bad luck.
  • There should not be any darkness in front of the main entrance. It should not be of cracked wood panel.
  • If the entrance door is a split door, it may disturb family harmony and relationships. Moreover, it should not be opposite a lift, staircase, tree, electrical pole, hospital, prison, cemetery, grave yard and temple. Rather it should be colourful.
  • Colours have a powerful influence on the human mind. They can make you warm, friendly, calm or irritable. Choose the colours that suit your nature and please you. You may use golden yellow or lime colour in the East, green in the North, blue in the West, red in the South, beige/yellow/green in the North East, green/orange in the South East and brown/beige/earthy tomes in the South West directions of your home.
  • Place the pictures of Gods, Saints & Sages on the East and North walls.
  • Furniture should be placed in the Southern and Western parts.
  • Do not place any mirror in front of your bed. (it can attract a third party to the relationship).
  • Do not place refrigerator, washing machine, washbasin and toilet opposite to your stove in the kitchen. Your bed should always have a solid wall behind you.
  • Purchase a home that has roads on all its four sides.
  • Polygonal plot brings financial losses.
  • Plot extended in South West and South East is also considered inauspicious.
  • The slope of land from North East to South West is a cause of financial debacle.
  • Do not display war scenes, fight scenes using swords, stone or wooden statues of terrifying giants or demons, scenes of weeping and crying people in tears in the paintings on your walls. Paintings, portraits & statues should be meticulously and tastefully selected.
  • The pictures or sculptures of pigs, snakes, eagles, owls, crows, pigeons & vultures should not be placed in a house.

There is nothing supernatural behind these facts. Such things are followed by both the ancient Vedic arts because Science itself supports the phenomenon of energy outflow. So just follow these simple steps and lead a prosperous life.
